About
At the Institute for Data, Democracy & Politics (IDDP) our mission is to help society understand critical challenges that arise at the intersection of digital technology, media and democracy, in turn informing sound policy solutions.
We are committed to supporting rigorous, evidence-based research that advances democratic values.
IDDP is housed in the School of Media and Public Affairs in GW's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
What We Do
IDDP combines diverse subject area expertise and innovative methodological approaches to conduct research to better understand and respond to potential threats to democracy that may arise out of our information ecosystems. IDDP endeavors to conduct research with practical and actionable applications for enhancing the health of American democracy, its communities and citizens.
Investigate
In an age when media manipulation, computational propaganda, and malicious social media- and AI-driven activities are undermining fundamental aspects of societal cohesion and democratic ideals, efforts to better understand and respond to these forces could not be more consequential. IDDP combines diverse subject area expertise and innovative methodological approaches to conduct research that enhances knowledge about these threats and efforts to counter them.
Collaborate
IDDP undertakes collaborative work because the scope of the challenges we confront are vast, and typically require expertise and energy from a wide range of voices. The collaborations fostered have driven innovative, impactful work. IDDP brings together scholars from across George Washington University, including the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, the Milken School of Public Health, the GW Law School, and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Amplify
IDDP strives to showcase and stimulate ideas that have broad relevance outside the academy, with implications for politicians, media leaders and the public. IDDP brings together scholars, prominent journalists, and media outlets to amplify its work to the broader public.
