Imagine a future: The US is dedicated to protecting consumers and has decided to create a ‘New Digital Platform Regulator’ or ‘FDA for AI’. As imagined, such an agency would ensure fair competition among the largest online platforms, implement and craft new data protection rules, mandate transparency and researcher access into AI systems, set standards and evaluation metrics that digital services have to meet to ensure product safety, or oversee independent auditors.

Such an agency will need to be adaptable, interdisciplinary (able to operate interagency) and consider human rights in evaluation metrics. Scholars and advocates are calling for these features, but people who have worked in government have tacit knowledge on how to make these processes work (or not work) in practice.

IDDP is inviting recent civil servants—from any US Federal Agency—to join in an afternoon of design thinking and networking. The workshops will take place on Tuesday, May 20th and Friday, June 13th from 1:30-3:30pm ET. The workshops will take place in-person. If you can't join us in-person but are interested in the event please still register but indicate that you would like to join us virtually. We are anticipating hosting some virtual workshops in the summer and fall.

Haven’t thought much about technology policy or the prospect of a new agency? No worries, this event is less focused on the agency mandates and more focused on designing effective processes. If you find the topic interesting— join us (we will send background material before the event).

This event is meant to offer participants an opportunity to imagine a future in which the US is building new agencies. We understand that current events make this challenging. If this is a topic you are interested in but not ready to participate in at this time, we are happy to engage your expertise at a later date.

The workshops will take place under Chatham House rules, the learnings from the workshop(s) will be compiled into a two page summary report.

⚠️ Registration does not guarantee admission. You will be contacted by email with confirmation and location details.
