The George Washington University’s Institute for Data, Democracy and Politics (IDDP) mission is to help society understand critical challenges that arise at the intersection of digital technology, media and democracy, in turn informing sound policy solutions. IDDP is committed to supporting rigorous, evidence-based research that advances democratic values. Housed within the School of Media & Public Affairs (SMPA), the Institute is looking for a Student Communications Assistant to join the team.

The student will report to IDDP’s Assistant Program Director and work closely with IDDP's Executive Director and Policy Fellow.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft content for websites, newsletters, blogs, social media, reports, and promotional publications.
  • Assist in the management of social media channels (LinkedIn BlueSky, Instagram and TikTok), including writing and posting original content.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating website content, including publications, news, researcher profiles, and events.
  • Assist in the production of engaging digital content, including:
    • Short-form videos
    • Graphics
    • Infographics
    • Presentations
    • Explainers
    • Social media assets
    • Event collateral
  • Develop and maintain editorial calendars aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Design marketing and promotional materials to promote IDDP, its work, and events.
  • Help promote IDDP events and serve as and IDDP ambassador the day of the event.
  • Analyze platform performance and recommend strategies for audience growth and increased visibility.
  • Maintain organized content libraries, communications assets, templates, and digital files.
  • Collaborate with IDDP faculty and researchers to identify communications opportunities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

- This position is guaranteed until December 31, 2026. Extension is contingent on Institute funding. 
- Please note this position is only available for currently enrolled GW Students.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Previous skills, training, or experience is required.

     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Bluesky, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Video editing or graphic design knowledge.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and proofreading skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, problem-solving & ability to meet tight deadlines.
