By one account, roughly 70% of Americans regard misinformation as a major threat, outpacing fears about climate change and infectious disease (1). This is true although the current and longer-term impacts of climate change are so clear and destructive. It is true even following the deaths of millions from COVID. Concern for misinformation surpasses these other crises, making it clear that Americans perceive misinformation as a dire, perhaps even existential threat.
